The Garden of Evening Mists – which received nine nominations at the 56th Golden Horse Awards – will air exclusively on HBO GO and HBO
Synopsis
“On a mountain above the clouds, in the central highlands of Malaya lived the man who had been the gardener of the Emperor of Japan.”
“Teoh Yun Ling, a survivor of the brutal attack of Japan camp, he has spent the last few years helping the authorities demand Japanese war criminals. But although he hated the Japanese, he met and asked the famous gardener, Nakamura Aritomo, to create a memorial garden for his brother who died in the camp.
Aritomo refuses, but instead accepts Yun Ling as his disciple. He agreed to teach him everything he needed to know, so he could design his own garden.
Living in a cottage on a tea plantation, Yun Ling began working at the Garden of Evening Mists. But outside, in the surrounding woods, another war is raging. Malaya’s emergency is entering its darkest days. Communist terrorists continued to kill growers and miners and their families, seeking to take over the country in any way; while the nationalist Malays fought for independence from centuries of British colonial rule.
But who is Nakamura Aritomo, and how does he fit into all this? How did he get exiled from his homeland? And that’s the real reason how Yun Ling survived the Japanese camp connected to Aritomo and the Garden of Evening Mists?

In the adapted film of the novel of the same name, there are at least a few characters of concern, namely Teoh Yun Ling (1950s) played by Sinje Lee and Chang Ai-chia (in different time periods), and Nakamura Aritomo played by Hiroshi Abe.
Teoh Yun Ling’s character is a strong woman and has a firm stance, but when she finally meets Nakamura Aritomo, her world changes and she has to face a new reality that is the power of true love.
