J.T. Rogers dan Ansel Elgort menceritakan mengenai proses pembuatan Tokyo Vice
Tokyo Vice, serial drama kriminal Max Original delapan episode karya penulis yang banyak meraih penghargaan J.T. Rogers , dalam serial ini juga berperan sebagai executive producer.
Tokyo Vice akan tayang tiga episode pada hari yang sama dengan A.S Kamis, 7 April hanya di HBO GO
Berikut ini adalah rangkuman wawancara Cinemags (Nuty Laraswaty) dengan J.T. Rogers dan Ansel Elgort
Untuk episode pilot, sutradara serial ini adalah peraih Emmy® Michael Mann , kemudian dilanjutkan oleh sutradara Destin Daniel Cretton.
Serial ini terinspirasi akan kisah nyata dari jurnalis Jake Adelstein, dari memoarnya yang berjudul Tokyo Vice: An American Reporter on the Police Beat in Japan.
J.T. Rogers menyampaikan bahwa Jake memberikan kebebasan baginya untuk membuat film ini sesuai visinya dan tentunya ini merupakan sebuah tantangan yang sangat besar dan ini sangat berarti bagi dirinya, Jake sangat memberikan arahan untuk hal-hal yang terkait dengan properti seperti peralatan minum yang dipakai dan hal-hal semacam itu, namun memberikan banyak kebebasan dalam penceritaannya.
Lebih lanjut J.T. Rogers menyampaikan bahwa proses pembuatan ini , ia bekerja sama dengan menyutradarai ini oleh Alan Poul yang dibesarkan di Amerika. berkolaborasi dengan banyak sutradara , dan ini amatlah menyenangkan.
Ansel Elgort menceritakan pula pendekatan Jake Adelstein, agar ia dapat memerankan dirinya, yaitu pada suatu waktu dengan membawanya ke sebuah ruang pengadilan, disana mereka mendengarkan banyak orang berbicara mengenai suatu permasalahan dan dari sana akan dibuat cerita untuk dituliskan . Ia mempelajari bagaimana cara Jake mendapatkan informasi yang ia perlukan untuk kemudian dituliskan dalam sebuah cerita.
Ia pun juga mendapatkan nasehat yang sama dari Jamie Foxx. Ia pun menyampaikan untuk memerankan karakter Jake, ia harus belajar bahasa Jepang agar menjadikan dirinya fasih dalam mengucapkan rangkaian kalimat, dan selama seminggu berlatih sebanyak dua kali dengan durasi 4 jam .
Sutradara Michael pada awalnya sangat menginginkan agar dirinya melatih bahasa jepangnya selama 6 jam setiap hari, namun Alan Poul menyelamatkannya (di sampaikan dengan tertawa) sehingga menjadi 4 jam saja . Jadi penampilannya pada serial Tokyo Vice ini pada dasarnya merupakan sebuah usaha yang sangat keras dengan mempergunakan tools yang disediakan dengan sebaik-baiknya.
Ansel Elgort menyampaikan bahwa pelajaran pertama dalam mengisahkan cerita yang bermuatan kriminal adalah harus bekerja sama dengan polisi, dan juga harus menangkap esensi kejadian secara jujur. Jurnalis harus melakukan pengecekan berulang , agar memastikan yang hendak ia tulis adalah tepat. Harus pula memastikan untuk mendapatkan gambaran menyeluruh dengan menanyakan beberapa orang yang kira-kira mengetahui mengenai sebuah peristiwa.
J.T. Rogers juga menambahkan bahwa serial bergenre kriminal ini, mendasarkan pada cerita mengenai kenyatan yang ada di lapangan sehari-hari, ini adalah realita dan bagaimana berada di suatu masa dimana masih ada Yakuza dan seseorang harus memutuskan hendak menjadi apa di masa ini .
Putusan ini harus segera diambil pada suatu titik yang akan menggambarkan sosok diri yang sebenarnya.

Pada Serial Tokyo Vice, Ken Watanabe berhasil mencuri perhatian penonton akan perannya sebagai Hiroto Katagiri
Cinemags , diwakili Nuty Laraswaty mendapatkan kesempatan eksklusif untuk mewawancarai aktor yang telah banyak berakting dengan beragam karakter.
Pada kesempatan ini , Ken menyampaikan suka dukanya, mendapatkan kesempatan bermain pada film produksi Amerika ini.
Masing-masing karakter pada serial ini memiliki latar belakang yang mendalam, dan ini untuk karakter Hiroto , ia tampilkan secara spesifik dan yang menarik bahwa walaupun ini merupakan sebuah serial. Ini tetap menggunakan pola dan proses saat syuting berlangsung layaknya sebuah film besar dan terkait akan lokasi di era tahun 90 an itu amatlah sulit ditemukan di Tokyo , terlebih lagi untuk para pemain, props , pakaian dan lain-lain harus pula mengacu ke masa itu.
Saat proses syuting pun, pandemi masih berlangsung sehingga ini menambah keseruan karena harus mempertimbangkan segala hal terkait protokol penanganan pandemi. Terlebih lagi, ini membuat produksi terpaksa dihentikan di tengah-tengah,untuk kemudian berlanjut kembali setahun kemudian. Ini memang terasa menyulitkan sekali, dikarenakan saat proses syuting berikutnya ia tidak diperbolehkan untuk bertemu dengan siapapun. Ini benar-benar proses pekerjaan yang berat.
Adapun membahas mengenai karakter yang ia perankan. Bagaimana karakter ini seakan memiliki dua kehidupan, di satu sisi merupakan sosok Bapak yang bijak dan sangat hangat kepada keluarganya, namun di lain sisi harus menjalankan pekerjaanya yang membawanya bertemu dengan Yakuza. Ia saat memerankan karakter ini dan juga saat harus beradu akting dengan Ansel Elgort sebagai Jake Adelstein , harus memerankan karakter dengan kepribadian yang berbeda di hadapan khalayak umum serta pada situasi yang terpisah. Mereka harus tampil di luar layaknya orang yang tak saling kenal, walaupun sesungguhnya perlahan menjadi dekat, namun demi penyelidikan tetap harus menampilkan masing-masing sebagai karakter yang tak saling dekat dan tidak begitu saling mengenal. Aktingnya ini walaupun mirip dengan peran dan karakter nya saat bersama dengan keluarganya, namun harus ia bedakan pula.
Lebih lanjut disampaikan bahwa alur cerita pada serial ini memang mengandung unsur-unsur emosional, namun inilah yang akan membuatnya menjadi lebih menarik.
Kemudian tema tahun 1990 ini menarik untuk diekspos.Inilah yang membedakan dengan karakter lain yang biasa ia perankan selama ini. Penonton di Jepang sendiri, tentunya dapat menikmati sajian tayangan yang mengedepankan peristiwa dan suasana di tahun 1990 an yang digambarkan secara realistis oleh para kreator serial ini.
Hiroto sendiri merupakan sosok yang tak senang memperlihatkan perasaan apapun kepada orang lain, ia memerankan karakter ini serupa dengan sosok aslinya, dan ini mengikuti skrip awalnya. Begitu pula dengan yang lainnya.
Disampaikan pula kepada Cinemags, bahwa ia telah mengenal J.T. Rogers sejak dahulu bermain dalam drama King and I, sehingga saat diajak lagi untuk bekerja sama dan juga skripnya menarik, tiada alasan baginya untuk bergabung tidak dengan project ini.
