Film seri I May Destroy You telah mulai tayang sejak tanggal 8 Juni 2020 di HBO GO. Film ini menarik banyak perhatian karena alur ceritanya yang tidak biasa yaitu mengenai kekerasan seksual, pertemanan, dan kecemasan, dengan episode tayang sebanyak 12 (dua belas) kali.
Premis dalam serial ini adalah kekerasan seksual yang tak mampu dikontrol sama sekali oleh korbannya, dikarenakan adanya zat kimia yang dicampur ke dalam minumannya. Hal ini mengakibatkan korban kehilangan kesadaran dan tidak dapat mengingat kejadian yang dialami kemudian termasuk saat dirinya mengalami kekerasan seksual. Isyu ini menjadi populer, karena banyaknya korban di luar sana yang mengalaminya.
Dalam serial ini , Arabella (Michaela Coel), adalah seorang penulis kulit hitam muda yang pergi bersama teman-temannya ke salah satu klub di London yang ramai pada malam sebelum tenggat waktu naskahnya harus diserahkan kepada penerbitnya.
Arabella pun mengalami pengalaman traumatis, saat zat kimia dicampurkan ke dalam minumannya, dan kemudian mengalami serangan seksual yang merubah kehidupannya untuk selamanya. Diceritakan dengan jujur dan terbuka,serta tanpa batasan membuat film ini seolah menawarkan sesuatu hal yang baru, terlebih kejadian ini dialami oleh seorang kulit hitam, sehingga dipertunjukkan pula dalam alur ceritanya, pengalaman serta kendala yang dialami dikarenakan perbedaan warna kulit ini.
Berkat televisi dan sosial media, film ini menjadi viral dan mendapat banyak perhatian. Film ini digambarkan oleh banyak media di luar sebagai film yang membahas mengenai budaya dan mendapatkan banyak pujian.
Cinemags diwakili Nuty Laraswaty kali ini pun mendapatkan kesempatan untuk dapat mewawancara Michaela Coel, sebagai penulis, sutradara, produser dan pemeran utama dalam film I May Destroy You.
Michaela Coel menyampaikan bahwa film dibuat berdasarkan atas pengalaman pribadinya, saat syuting filmnya terdahulu, Chewing Gum. Atas dasar inilah film ini dibuat untuk menyebarkan kesadaran bahwa kekerasan seksual merupakan peristiwa universal , dapat terjadi dimana saja dan pada siapapun (perempuan maupun lelaki), serta dapat merubah prespektif pemikiran diri . Saat menulis skrip film ini, merupakan pengalaman yang mendalam bagi dirinya, pada awalnya ia merasa sulit untuk menuliskannya namun lama kelamaan menjadi terbiasa dan menjadi salah satu penyembuhan bagi dirinya.
Ia juga mengharapkan agar semua yang menyaksikan film ini, dapat memuaskan rasa keingintahuannya dan juga bagi yang mengalaminya dapat melakukan instrospeksi diri, film ini dapat merupakan sebuah bantuan / terapi untuk menyembuhkan luka-luka. Bagi yang pernah mengalami kekerasan seksual, dapat merasakan bahwa dirinya tidaklah seorang diri saja , namun ada orang-orang lain yang juga mengalami hal tersebut. Hal ini sangat membantu, agar dapat kembali tidur dengan nyenyak, tanpa terbebani akan peristiwa tersebut.
Film ini ditulis , disutradarai dan diperankan oleh Michaela Coel, sehingga saat proses produksi dirasakan sulit namun juga menyenangkan. Ia tidak terlalu banyak menemukan jenis tontonan film bertemakan kekerasan seksual, sehingga amat bersemangat saat dalam proses pembuatan film ini. Disampaikan pula lebih lanjut bahwa film ini memiliki unsur kejutan dengan berawal dari suatu tempat tertentu dan berakhir dengan twist yang berbeda dengan yang dibayangkan.
