John Hsu adapts Detention game into a unique thriller
John Hsu has always been interested in digital culture, video games, and the sci-fi genre. Even his John Hsu TV film, Real Online, won the “Best Director Award” at the 2005 Golden Bell Awards, taiwan’s largest television awards ceremony.
He was a member of the 2007 Berlinale Talent Campus and a Shopsteward INPUT 2009.
His short film has also previously passed the Rotterdam FIlm Festival selection.
He is also the founder of AFK PL@YERS, taiwan’s largest machinima manufacturer.
His VR film Your Spiritual Temple Sucks was selected to be screened at various film festivals, including Sundance, World VR Forum, BIFAN, Sydney, and Neuchatel.
This time John Hsu made his debut in his first big screen film titled Detention which is an adaptation of the famous game titled Detention into a unique thriller.
Regarding this film John Hsu conveys the following:
“As a gamer, the creepy visuals and heartwarming story of the Detention game created a deep impression for me. Since then I hope to adapt this game into a film and stir the hearts of the audience. Aiming to be true to the original story, I improved the unique visuals and emotions I tried to convey, making the film a unique thriller in terms of story and style.”
The synopsis is as follows:
The year 1962 was full of quiet and tense atmosphere among the people.
Fang, a 12th grader at Tsuihua High School, falls in love with Zhang, who is a counseling teacher.
Having problems at school and at home, Fang felt only Zhang understood him.
Wanting freedom, Zhang formed a study group with his friends and students, including Yin and Wei. Reading books that the government prohibits allows them to be able to feel freedom, but at the same time this puts their lives in danger.
One day, Zhang suddenly disappeared, and only Fang and Wei, 11th graders, could remember Zhang. Fang and Wei begin searching for the missing Zhang, but slowly their world begins to change.
Then, in a world inhabited by ghosts and spirits, they must face a terrifying reality.
